Okay, yesterday I posted on how we are trying to spend less money. With the cost of gas, food, insurance, etc...we just need to cut back. I found another place to save - my books. I buy my books at Half Priced Books or yard sales. Still, I buy books. I am sure I spend over a hundred dollars a year on books.
Mom recently loaned me a library book she had finished early. I took it back tonight and got myself one of those new fangled library cards for FREE. I know this is probably a durrr moment for the rest of you, but I have had a book addiction since I was about 14. Even with the love of visiting book stores, looking at books, buying books and reading books, I only have a few I actually would consider rereading. Those include East of Eden by John Steinbeck, The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy, anything at all by Margaret Atwood, my cookbooks, and a few gardening books. Of all the books I bought this year, I don't consider one a keeper.
So I have one more way to save money. Not only will I save the cash I used on the books but also the money it takes to drive to the bookstore more than 20 miles away.
Any other money saving ideas?

I hate to say this...but I would save lots of money if I would stick to perennials and not buy one annual, but I have a hard time resisting all the pretty flowers at the garden centers. I think I could save money by planting seeds though instead of buying plants. Very thought provoking post!
ReplyDeleteVery good idea meadowview. I now vow to start more annual plants from seeds.
ReplyDeleteWe're such confirmed bookaholics that we not only have no budget left for books, we have NO room. So we were thrilled to discover our little local library a few years ago. Free books! Books that go away all by themselves! Woo-hoo! Needless to say, we've become regulars. (Our library has CDs and DVDs, too.) My only complaint is that they won't let you check out the magazines!
ReplyDeleteCongrats! It's funny you post this when I'm starting my master's program this Spring to actually be a librarian. I LOVE THE LIBRARY!
ReplyDeleteHi ofb, I am well aware of your book situation. Y'all blow me away. Our librarian said she will take my extra books off of my hands. Double yeah.
ReplyDeleteHi Sister, so glad to hear you are going to start working on your masters. When I walked into the library yesterday I immediately thought of you. That is your perfect job, tons of books and nice and quiet.
I'm eating less;) and that is saving some dollars. I turn lights off all the time and reuse my grocery sacks for bathroom trash bags.
ReplyDeleteI love the library too. I can sit in there for hours in the peace and quiet drinking in the wonders of the world.
Hi anna, wish I had the will power to eat less. I also wish I had a few hours to hang out in the library, but there is always a monkey on the cell phone:)
ReplyDeleteI love the library in theory. But in practice it's a whole other story. Oh, the free books are great. But they never turn out to be free for me--I'm notoriously bad about RETURNING them and then the library fines start adding up. Wing Nut refuses to go with me to the library. She's certain that my face is on a wanted poster at the check-out desk and as soon as the librarians see me the library police will come take me away.
ReplyDeleteNow I know why I like you. You read Steinbeck.
ReplyDeleteCurmudgeon, that is hilarious. I would be late all the time too. Wanting another book to read keeps me motivated to turn the books in early or on time.
ReplyDeleteThanks again foxymoron.
