The Bestest Compost Tool

Posted by Picasa

Here is my favorite composting tool, my compost screen. (Ignore the shadow Debbi thighs) Simply put rough compost on top, shake, and the wonderful finished compost falls through. This tool works even better when manned by Monkeys. Manly Man made this for me out of a plywood frame with masonry wire cloth stapled across it. Actually, he made it as the lid to my worm bin, not knowing I would change it's job title from worm bin lid to compost sifter. It has served me well for about four years.

What is your favorite composting tool?

  1. I'm making a mental note of this because we are getting ready to finally install an official compost bin and I know I'm going to need this.

  2. Cindy, Make it just a little wider than whatever you intend to sift the compost into. It makes it easier to handle.

  3. Do the rabbit and chickens count for their droppings as tools? I use a turning fork to turn the mixture. Otherwise, not too many tools involved. Hee hee, that is the glory of it!

  4. I love my compost sifter too, it has long handles that rest over the wheelbarrow so you just slide it back & forth to release that blackgold! Hubby made it for me this past spring and it has been a lifesend.

  5. Ooooh, how wonderful! I don't have a compost pile, but I keep trying to figure out how to work one into the scenery where it doesn't stick out like a sore thumb; I'm very limited on space.

  6. This is where I hang my head in shame. I don't compost.

  7. Ooh, I'm so jealous! I just have circular compost sifters, not a great heavy-duty number like yours. My favorite compost tool? It's a toss-up between my earthworms (and earthworm composter) and anybody who's willing to fork the finished compost out of my bins and into my garden cart!

  8. Lorilee, I use rabbit poo as a key ingredient.

Racquel, I would like one with handles. Maybe next time.

Nola, You can make compost with a couple of large plant containers. You know, the black plastic ones that shrubs come in. Those can be kept out of the way.

Momo, I need to repost my patio container composting set up.

OFB, I think those little round compost sifters are cute. I love my worms too.

  9. Your compost looks so good Debbi! I just turn my heap with a fork and it's getting nice and rich underneath. Never thought of sifting it, great idea!

  10. Foxy, The sifted compost is easier for me to amend the soil with. It is not necessary at all.

  11. I say screen wins too! I have a big one to fit over the top of my wheelbarrow.
