I Want a Last Freeze Date Written in Stone

We had a warm wet stormy day. At about 6:00 in the evening the wind picked up and blew in some cold cold weather. I truly believed it was too late in the season for a freeze. Silly me. The weatherman says we will have snow flurries. So we do the move the plant dance one more time.

The lemon trees, ficus, and cleradendron are back in the kitchen.

Pepper and tomato sets are back inside as well.

Trixie asks, "Why do you keep bringing these in and out of the house? Are you just crazy? Never mind, I answered my own question."

I went outside in the cold cold dark and took this picture of the pots covering my tomato transplants because I want this blog to be more ridiculous more interesting.

  1. I know! I can't believe it. I'm supposed to be at a garden tour right now. But it's about 50 degrees or less. Waiting to see if it will warm up.

  2. Debbie, I totally agree with you! Looks like you are getting some unnecessary exercise with that plant dance.Hope it warms up and stays warm for you.

  3. Ha!!! I'm not laughing at you, I'm sympathizing. The space between our kitchen table and deck door becomes plant central every spring once we move the tender plants from the greenhouse to the deck. Mercy! Last year, within two weeks of plant moving day, we had hail the size of ice cubes rip through our yard and garden. Nothing like rushing inside with 75 container plants! That Mother Nature, what a joker. Loved the photo of Trixie giving you "the look"!

  4. I want to sign that petition! No pepper or tomato starts here yet. I'm just trying to catch a dry day so I can get outside and plant the lettuces and other greens and get the cloche over them.

  5. I'm with you! I took everything out of the new greenhouse a full 3 weeks too early. And planted veggies then, too. How dumb am I? WHAT is the point of a greenhouse if your plants are shivering in the cold outside?!!! And we moved our planned trip to the Austin Zilker Gardenfest to tomorrow because it is so blustery and cold today.

  6. You know Cheesehead was just complaining to me about some pots I have that are just like those. I told him I thought they would make good frost covers for when I finally get some veggies planted. My ground is still frozen solid! I wish they would set a freeze date in stone though. It made it up over 35 here again today so I was able to get out and get some outside work done. (You probably think I'm crazy for being glad for a warmup of such low temps!)

  7. Trixie is a good name for a cat! Also, plants don't read, even if the date were written in stone! My winter-sown tomatoes aren't up yet, of course...

  8. I'm a glass half empty guy, so I won't touch anything outdoors for at least a month! I've got some plants that are itching to get outside, but our last freeze could happen as late as mid-May, so they'll have to be patient!

  9. Brenda, It stayed cold and windy here all day. I have chapped lips and cheeks.

Beckie it will warm up tomorrow.

OFB, Thanks for sharing. Misery love company.

Curmudgeon, I just wish we didn't have the extremes 80's one day 30's the next for pete's sake.

Diana, That cold front was a bugger getting most of the state. brrrr.

Cinj, now you can show him my pictures and say, "I told you so."

Monica, You have a good point, plants don't read. Neither do pets and my Monkeys frequently pretend they can't.

Jim, in May I will be planting okra. If I had to wait until then, I would have a fit and fall in it.

  10. Wouldn't that be something if the weather could be cooperative at this time of the year. March is quite tricky for us. I noticed our garden centers had tomato & pepper transplants out already. No way will I buy those until at least April 15th.

  11. racquel, after all the panic, it didn't really freeze. The petunias were a little damaged, but I think it was the wind not the cold. Hide and watch, it will freeze tonight and I will be really sad tomorrow.

  12. Still getting frost here too but not every night! I have a lemon I bought in February and I left it outside it seems o.k. so far. Will you be planting yours in the ground or leaving in a pot to bring in during the winter months?
I still have plants inside though on my plant cart. I keep thinking about moving them outside but am a little worried still.

  13. Cindee, I drag those citrus in and out of the house every time it gets near freezing. Probably foolish.
