GBBD August 2008

Blooms are hard to find in my garden in August. It is too hot and there has been very little rain. All I really have blooming are zinnias. They reseed themselves every year. I used to have hot pink, light pink, green Envy, yellow, white, and orange. Now I have pink, white, and......

...one little lonely yellow. I think I need to increase my zinnia gene pool.

I found a May pop. This is the fruit of the passion vine. I wonder what I can do with it?
Here is a rainbow just because I thought you might like it. Look really close and you can see the faint glow of the double arch. These always make me feel special.
Thanks again to Carol of May Dreams Garden for hosting Garden Bloggers Bloom Day.

  1. Zinnias are a newfound joy around my garden. I'm glad to know they reseed themselves... I just sowed more seed in some small pots to transplant in a month or so for some fall color. It's an experiment... not sure anything will come of it but what do I have to lose?

    Loved the rainbow, too.

  2. That's exactly what I need to remember to plant is zinnias. I keep forgetting how much the butterflies enjoy them. Beautiful rainbow Deb. :)

  3. This is the second time today I have thought I need to plant zinnias next year. I better write that down so I will remember! I have often wondered what one does with the fruit of the passionflower....

  6. HI meems, I have grown them all my life. It wouldn't be my garden without them. I can't imagin that you would have any trouble with transplants. Good luck.

Hi pg, I always love a double rainbow.

Cindy, I don't know what to do with it, but I am going to find out.

Hello my Japanese friend, double rainbows do make me feel happy and lucky.

  7. Are Maypops edible like Mayapples? After seeing everyone wax lyrically about Zinnias this year, I have to jump on the bandwagon & plant some next year.

  8. As I am sure I've moaned to you, my zinnia seeds did not even come up. And I wanted zinnias so badly! Next year, it's to the nursery for me. I'm not trusting the seeds! Love the rainbow!

  9. Hi mr mcgregor's daughter, I have read that they are edible and that they may make one sleepy. I am thinking of letting one of the monkeys taste it first. Zinnias are so easy you should give them a shot.

Hey brenda, hmmm, wonder what happened to those seeds. I have never had a problem and you shouldn't either. I bet there was something wrong with them. I have seedlings coming up right now on their own again. I think we still have time.

  10. What a cool looking thing that May pop. Haven't tried zinnias but can't hear them mentioned without thinking of Margaret Atwood's novel The Robber Bride. One of the characters is named Zenia.

  11. Curmudgeon, that is one of my favorite books. Have you read "The Blind Assasin." Also awsome.
