And Then It Burst Into Flames

You might remember I took a chance and tried to grow popcorn this year. I got corn that sort of popped. My first try scorched in the pot. My second try yielded a few tiny popped kernels, which were not really edible.

Sister#2 is a newbie gardener. She started her popcorn in her nice raised bed garden. She got better popcorn ears than I did. I'm not jealous, really, I'm not. She followed my advise. I should have done the same.

Last week she called me with a corn question, "Is it okay to pick my popcorn now?" The Internet said to let it dry out on the stalk, so that was my answer. I gave this advise with the enthusiasm of a seasoned, experienced popcorn grower instead of admitting she knows as much as I do. She then explained about a worm that she found in one ear. No no no, not her ear, but in one of the ears of corn(stop snickering). We decide she should pick the popcorn early and let it dry out in a basket. Problem solved.

Last night, after we arrived at the hospital to take care of baby Jack. She asks, "Did you pop your popcorn?" I said, " yes" and explained my results. She says, "I tried to pop my popcorn and it caught on fire. Did you put your popcorn in a paper bag in the microwave?"

Ummm....no.

Sorry Sister, the smell must have been lovely.

  1. I am laughing so hard. I wish you were here to hear me Bless her heart is what we say down here when someone pulls of a stunt like that. I knew a man that cooked a pot pie with the foil pan---in the microwave. He set the time for 30 mintues and then went to take a nap. He woke up to a fire and horrible stench.

  2. LOL! What a site that must have been. In our microwave everything society it wouldn't surprise me if more people did something like that.

At least she tried something new out of her comfort zone. I'm sure she'll get it right next time!

Anna- He cooked it in the microwave for 30 minutes? Even if it wasn't in a foil pan he probably still would have woke up to a horrible stench. I guess he should have just cooked it in the regular oven!

  6. Well, I didn't even know there was a special kind for popping, I thought it was just dried out corn kernels! Has the smell cleared out yet? Peeyuuu!

  8. Anna, it was funny. In her defense, she bought the corn from a local nursery as microwave popcorn on the cob. She took a few kernals from that and planted them. Her homegrown popcorn was what went up in flames.

Cinj, she was just doing what she had done before with a store bought popcorn on the cob. It just hadn't dried out enough

Brenda, she is a neonatal icu nurse. She has plenty of smarts, but this was too funny.

  9. Nola, popcorn is different than regular corn or so the seed companies will have us believe. I was in her home today and it smelled fine. She tried to pop another cob and it worked a little. We just think they needed to dry out a little.

    Hi Cindy, me too.
