Well, Hello There

While I wasn't paying attention, stuff started to bloom. The mutabalis rose and peach trees are in bloom. The tree is in a neighbor's yard. Do you think it is grafted or just a freak of nature?

The weather almost felt like summer. I even saw a mosquito. Serioiusly, a mosquito, in March. There are also May flies flying all over my house. Somebody, left the back door open and they invited themselves in. I really don't like May flies. They get into everything.

Do You Speak for the Trees?

This is one of my favorite books. I love almost any thing by Dr. Seuss, but this is the best. The message is about greed and the outcome of greed on the enviornment. Still, it leaves us with the hope of that seed.

Do you speak for the trees?

What is your favorite childrens' book?

Fishy Business

The little water garden was pretty gross. Leaves and other stuff had fallen into it and settled on the bottom. We had tried to clean it by taking out about half of the water and replacing it. All that did was stir up the mess. That pair of monkeys in the picture completely cleaned it out for me. We used the dirty fish water to fertilize in the vegetable garden.

More Baby Pictures

Here are pictures of the tomato babies I picked for my garden. They were taken from the nine cell packs and repotted into 4" pots. Next to them are two plants I bought from the hardware store. They are Russian Black Krim and Old German. I have never grown Old German before. The tomato babies include two that are new for me - Avivvi and Ladino di Panacchio. They are from the seed exchange hosted by Monica over at Faerie Garden. Now all I need are two Celebrities, a cherry, Green Zebra, and Yellow Pear.

A note on the container greenhouses. They work fantastic. No plants have burned. The Russian Black Krim and Old German were transplanted from 4" pots to 6" pots and placed directly in the larger container on February 24th. The Russian Black already has buds.

Here is the list.
Early Girl
Better Boy
San Marzano
Avivvi
Ladino di Panacchio
Celebrity
Cherry
Old German
Black Krim
Yellow Pear (if I can find it)
Green Zebra (if I can find it)

I have a 27 foot row of raised bed for these plants. If I plant 24 inches apart they will all fit. It will be my wall of tomatoes.

Which tomatoes are you planning on growing this year?

Ranting and Raving about Stupid Self Important People

Posted by Picasa
This is what we have been dealing with for two weeks. This is the street next to our house. These are the parents who cannot read the sign. They are so important they cannot get in line with the rest of the parents to pick up their children. They are so privileged that they think they are allowed to endanger the lives of all of the children who walk home from school. They also do not think that stop signs and cross walks apply to them. Oh and that speed limit, well that is for everyone else. Last week one of these very important people almost ran over Middle Monkey. Today one of them almost hit Baby Monkey. The school does not feel they should enforce the pick up and drop off policy and the police are too busy writing tickets up on the highway to spend fifteen minutes in the afternoon to make sure the children get home safely. I am sure all of that money they make from writing tickets is way more important that the lives of children after all. While I was taking these pictures, a lady parked totally illegally rolled down her window and asked if I didn't have something better to do. Well, no I don't have something better to do than try to insure that my children make it home from school alive. They ought to be ashamed of themselves. The picture only shows one car. There were at least ten lined up in the do not load zone and wrapped around to in front of our home. One creep actually parked in our driveway. Don't ever buy a house next to a school. Seriously

Out on the Streets: East Dallas Community Garden

I've been building up to this for a couple of days. This is the most exciting local garden find I have come across in years.

This is the East Dallas Community Garden located at 1416 N. Fitzhugh between Ross and Bryan streets. It is located just behind Jimmy's Store.

This community garden was established in 1987 to assist south east Asian refugees.

The gardeners sell produce to pay for water, purchase seeds and offset other gardening related costs.

Many of us are rallying around the "Buy Local" movement. To me this is more than just buying local, it is providing support and resources to this little community niche.

Remember all the produce I came home with on Saturday for very little coin. We thought they were selling themselves short, but the point is to provide funds for the garden, not making a large profit.

I talked briefly to a gardener who spoke a little English. She said that most of the gardeners were elderly and on SSI benefits. She feels like it helps them get out and exercise. Two large plots rent for $30 a year.

Now go check out the other On The Street Posts hosted by VP.
