I am Aunt Debbi & I Want Your Trash

Okay, my neighbors think I am crazy. I have been stealing their bags of leaves for years. I have requested their tea bags, eggshells, fruit and vegetable peels, and such. My mom saves all her compostables (not a word, but it should be) in the freezer for me. I pick them up ever few weeks when we are over for a visit.
The back door neighbors gave me their bags of leaves last fall. These nice folks just lined them up along my back fence. It has been raining a lot the last week or two so all the neighborhood lawns are overgrown. My nice neighbors who give me leaves offered their grass clippings. I took them all. He was going to bag them for me. No need, just dump them straight over the fence into the pile. See how the compost pile is overflowing. Those grass clippings are getting nice and hot. I wonder how many other neighbors I can talk out of their trash.

  3. Thanks Nancy. They seem to be warming up to the idea. We kept about 100 lbs of stuff out of the landfill today. BTW, that green stuff would have definitely created methane if it were buried in a landfill.

  4. Funny - I was just laughing about composting today. Could NOT get my compost pile to do right at the last house, in spite of all my self-teaching and trying. Today I dumped a tub of weeds from last week or two and found the nicest, dead, rich compost material! I just can't win! Glad you are having such success!

  5. diana, today I am happy, but I have spent the better part of the time I have been blogging complaining that this compost pile would not heat up. Turns out I had a bad thermometer. sometimes it is hard to just "let compost happen."

  6. That's one way to get as much organic material as you can find. lol

  7. We used to have more leaves than we could compost and I'd always bag some up for a friend with multiple piles. Now we have ZERO deciduous trees (different house/garden) and I'm looking for some karmic payback... maybe I should scout out some likely prospects before the leaves actually come down. Thanks for the idea!

  8. Hi pg, I am relentless on this one.

Good luck finding all the greens and browns you need. I think we can help reduce our own and our neighbors carbon footprint. Plus we get to keep the compost.

  9. I did remember that you collected trash;) That is some pile you got going. Our city collects it all( the grass clippings) and compost it too. I live just down from the compost pile---you know I love that!

  10. Anna, middle monkey is trying to get our little town to start a recycling center. There are three good examples in neighboring towns. We are working on it. I will continue to make my own compost. It just feels right.

  11. Deb, we have a 'green bin' collection in our town where the council takes green rubbish and turns it into compost. However, none of my neighbours subscribe to it as they give all their green waste to me - animal bedding, hedge and grass clippings, the lot. Then I turn it into compost or mulch and they get some of my veggie surplus as a thank you. They think they get the better part of the deal and I think I do, so it's a win-win all round!

  12. Way to go Debbi!!! I used to snag bags of leaves and grass clippings that had been set at the curb on my way to work, but now I never see them. Heartaches!

  16. I intended to start my heap on the weekend but hubby mowed the grass without a catcher! I'm listening out for neighbours who cut their grass now so I can ask for some clippings to get my heap going.
    Almost Spring down here!!
