The Domestication of Debbi

Tuesday is one of my days off. It is cold and wet. We should begin getting freezing rain and sleet in the next few hours. Needless to say, I stayed in the house and off the roads today.

I have five quilting projects to complete during the next few months. My sewing corner was a disorganized mess. I spent most of the day straightening it up and creating a quilt project storage system. A couple of years ago, I straightened out my craft closet. I sorted my larger scrap fabrics by color, ironed and folded them and used four plastic baskets to hold the fabrics. They are stacked two deep on one of the shelves in the crafts closet. This has stayed organized for two years. For me, this is a minor miracle. I am housekeeping challenged.

I have several boxes that were holding random sewing ingredients sort of like my seed basket. I separated everything out and put each project in its own box and then made a special box for templates an stamps. The fabric that was left over from other projects was ironed, folded and stored in the crafts closet. Hopefully, this new system will keep me organized. Now I just need to find my thimble.

Here is the quilt I need to finish first. It is for baby Clare who is due to arrive in this world on February 7. I better get on with it. We believe these nine patch quilt squares were pieced by a paternal great grandmother. I am going to finish the top and quilt it for the baby.

We had homemade chicken noodle soup and wheat bread for dinner tonight.

Chicken Noodle Soup
4 Chicken thighs
6 Cups water (to begin with)
1/2 Large onion chopped
1 Stalk celery chopped
1/4 Fresh, finely chopped herbs including parsley, thyme and rosemary
3 Chicken bouillon cubes
8 Ounces wide egg noodles
Ground pepper to taste

Boil the chicken thighs until completely done. Stop before the meat falls off the bone. Remove the chicken from the pot and set aside to cool. Add all of the other ingredients to the chicken stock and simmer all day if you like. Remove the skin and bones from the chicken and discard. Chop the chicken meat and return to the pot. Ten minutes before serving, bring the stock to a rolling boil and add noodles. Serve with homemade wheat bread if you've got it.

Stay warm and cozy.

  1. How come you're so clever Miss Debbi? Seems you can turn your hand to anything, did your mother teach you these things?
And is that a treadle sewing machine? My mother had one just like it when I was little, they're beautiful.
That soup sounds great, even on this hot day that is going to reach over 100F today. I love chicken soup, it's so comforting.

  2. Foxy, my mom was organizationally challenged as well. I just had that one basket system work so I am going to copy it over and over until the whole house is straight. That is a hand cranked sewing machine on a table made from an old treadle. Yes, I use it. My electric machine is in the attic because I am afraid of it. It is below freezing here. The heat of summer seems like a distant memory. Check back in August I am sure I will be ranting about the heat then.

  3. Debbi - I'm like you. I describe myself as a binge and purge organizer. I can get it all in order, I just can't keep it that way! So there is perpetual closet-cleaning at my house. But the house is clean, it's just behind those closet doors you can't look! The quilt will be adorable and so special with that history. Perfect night for that homemade soup. We're waiting for the sleet here tonight and icy roads tomorrow morning.

  4. Ironed your fabric scraps? Now that's what I call organized! I have mine all jammed into drawers, willy-nilly. Some day I'll organize them, when I retire! LOL

  5. Diana, My deck has frozen over. I could be described as a desperate organizer. It is either clean it up or move.

Msrobin, I would love for you to think I am hyper together but, when I say fabric scraps, I mean something larger than a fat quarter. The actual scraps are in a scrap bag.

    You're an inspiration.

  7. Sounds like you had a wonderful day! (I love stay at home days)
I keep saying I am going to turn one of the kids bedrooms into a "craft" room-never seem to get around to it.
Stay warm today--it's cold and icy!

  8. Foxy, I won't make it very far. I never do.

  9. Wow, what a marvelous organizing system. I am SO impressed! And I love your sewing machine. (Being a Luddite, I'm afraid of high-tech stuff, too. I finally broke down and bought a little food processor this fall, but have yet to try to use it. Sigh... ) You're making a great legacy for one very lucky little girl! We had snow and sleet yesterday, too. Hurry spring!!!---Silence

  10. Hi Silence, I am very glad we found those blocks. Hopefully, I will keep my stuff organized no. As much as you like to cook, that food processor will come in handy.
