I Tried, I really Tried

That baby squirrel won't stay out from underneath the potting bench. We even cleaned it out to make it less appealing. The baby ran up a near by tree and waited a while and then came right back. Teenage Monkey was still sorting pots and the squirrel moved right back in. I think Momma squirrel may have moved on so the baby is on it's own. We left it some pecans and water and left the potting bench in such a way that it can hide from the cats. In the meantime, I guess we have a squirrel to add to the menagere. I should be able to snap some pictures if it continues to insist the potting bench is home.

Now, what are we going to call it?

Nola already tagged it Baby S. Any other suggestions?

  1. You don't need a squirrel. BS is funny! I can send my grand dog to keep it company. She thinks everything was put on earth for her to enjoy and love. She has no idea that she weighs 40+lbs. She'll be its mother.

  2. Anna, I KNOW I DON'T NEED A SQUIRREL. TELL THE SQUIRREL:) Your grand dog would be welcome, but Abby does not play well with others. Must be the police dog in her. She's the bad cop.

  3. Too funny/horrible for words! I battle squirrels almost daily so the idea of having to take one in... well, it's pretty cute, actually. Baby Squirrel! BS for short, I do like that, fitting for all the put us through. Have you seen the photos of that dog who let a baby squirrel in with her puppies? It was so dear. Any wild animal shelters who could help you out?

  4. Oh how cute(-: How big is it? Is it still small enough that it was nursing? Maybe put some sunflower seeds out too. We raised a baby squirrel on a bottle one time. It grew up and was returned to the wild. It was quite the little character!

  5. Karen, I can't imagine that it will want to stay here long term. To much going on.

Cindee, it is about four inches not including its tail. I think it is big enough to be eating regular food, at least I hope it is.

  6. Okay I'll swap you one baby squirrel for six laying hens!

And I think you should call it "Trish". I wish I was all on my own in a potting shed.

  7. Names?? Is it is boy squirrel or a girl squirrel?? :) Just kidding!
Since you have monkeys, can it just be called "squirrel" ?

  8. Good luck with the little guy! I once raised an orphaned baby bunny using an empty Jergens squirt bottle and warm milk. (I was in sixth grade at the time.) We called it "WR" for Wild Rabbit. It grew, thrived, was released in the yard, and hung out with us for a number of years thereafter. Anything's possible! I think you should call him Havoc, since he's certainly going to wreak some!

  9. I'd call him Nut. I mean, he's nuts to choose to live in an already chaos filled envirnoment, am I right? S/he must think you're a great family to choose to live there. Squirrels also like nuts, and you know the saying- you are what you eat!

  10. I like Cinj's idea of Nut. In fact, I like the fact that squirrels tend to be a bit nutty. They're my totem animal! :)

  11. BS sounds good to me! Shhh! I won't tell Charlie Ross that Aunt Debbi's got a baby squirrel. We have to spell "squirrel" around him or he goes nuts to the glass door in search of one!

  12. Foxy, it's a deal if I can catch it. I've been trying to get someone to name a baby Debra since I was in my twenties. No go.

Linda, You must not remember the picture baby monkey took last year. I will post it just for you.

OFB, I don't think we will be hand raising this one. I think it is old enough to go on its own. We rehabed a cotton tail rabbit a couple of summers ago. The thing hated me and was very ungrateful.

Cinj, the nut will fit right in.

Monica, now I want a totem aniam. What is a totem animal?

Linda, maybe charlie ross can get it to leave.

  13. Nut & Shell were the squirrels in "A Secret Garden," so maybe Nut is it??

  14. Karen, BS seems to be sticking, but Nut is very funny.

  15. How cute! Maybe you should come up with a name that means persistent?

  16. Tessa, like Git? My mom has a dog named Git. It was a stray that wouldn't leave.
