Purple and Orange

Posted by Picasa

Like most gardeners and quilters, there are colors I am drawn to and colors I shy away from. Purple, pink, yellow, blue, and green are my flower, plant and fabric favorites. I do have some red, but not too much. I avoid orange. I just don't care for it. Well I didn't until today. There it is, a color triad of purple, orange and green. The nasturtium were started from seed. Luck would have it that all of them in the container are orange. The large pot has a variegated ginger plant along with the nasturtium. The orange higher up in the back is a dwarf pomegranate tree in bloom. Of course, the purple blooms are petunias. The confederate jasmine on the fence is in full bloom and the place smells like heaven.

Now I have a new color combination I will use again. Blues are still my favorite, but I won't run away from orange anymore. If you look closely at the picture you will see yet another broken pot. I just can't help myself.

What is your favorite color combination?

  1. That's a striking combination of color! I like it and I also like purple & yellow together. :)

  2. Racquel, I love purple and yellow and blue and yellow together. It was just orange that I had a problem with. Now I know how to handle it.

  3. Orange is one of the colors I don't use in my garden either. But I do like your combination of purple with orange. Iplanted nasturtiums from seed-wonder if they will all be orange? :)

  5. We've had Echinacea purpurea growing with baby's breath. Lovely.

  6. Kim and Victoria, I have coneflower but can't grow baby's breath to save my life. What's the trick.

  7. After planting that Gertrude Jeckyll and seeing it clear pretty bluish pink, I'm sold on a new combo. I've had pink before but this a particularly attractive shade. So now I like, Gertrude Pink, Knock-Out Red, and Azure Blue.

  8. I personally adore orange, but I know what you mean. For example, I don't think I like pink, red, or white flowers, and yet I can think of dozens of pink, red, and white flowers I like... even though they aren't colors I'm drawn to in other aspects of life!

  9. I always hated the purple-orange combination, having only seen it in its most extreme form---crayon-orange poppies with crayon-purple iris. Eeeewwww!!! It was only when a friend asked me to put purple and orange fabrics together for a quilt she wanted to make that I came to truly appreciate the possibilities. Softest peach and pumpkin all the way to red-hot scarlet, lavender and mauve to purple-black, plus all the added texture of various patterns and perhaps a few tiny pieces of bright red and/or chartreuse---oh. Those fabrics looked phenomenal!!! So now can appreciate it in the garden, too, but only when used like that. I still hate crayon orange alone with crayon purple!---Silence

  10. Anna, I can't remember which blogger (maybe Carol) combined the cherry red knockout with the pink bloom of gulf muhly grass. But that was the prettiest thing I have ever seen.

Monica, I just don't think I am drawn to hot colors. I just like softer stuff.

Silence, The purple and orange would not have worked without the green folage. A friend just finished a quilt in orange and green, it was very very pretty.

  11. I do love yellow and red together. But I am drawn to blue plants. I didn't think I'd get orange either. But now I have it. The colors just beckon.

  12. That color combination is just beautiful. I adore the orange nasturtium and the foliage it has!

My philosophy is try it together and see if it works. Usually it does!

  13. Brenda, I have only had orange by accident or on a plant that fruits, like my pom. This is the first time I have ever liked what I saw when there was orange in it.

Ginger, Thanks. I wish I could say I did it on purpose.

  14. I LOVE purple and orange together! I think it's unbeatable. Last year my red hot pokers were blooming behind a pot of purple verbena and it was spectacular. It's good to find new combos isn't it?
